With the weather turning nice, we are probably all tending our yards, getting gardens ready and enjoying the warm sunlight! I am looking forward to wonderful Sunday drives filled with untraveled roads. I love to take these drives to experience beautiful wild flowers and of course there will be deer to dodge.
We will sadly miss Mike Schute, who lived just west of Duxbury. He was killed a couple weeks ago, when his airplane crashed in Grantsburg WI. It is always sad when our lovely community is less one person due to tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, he will be missed
As you know, this is four wheeling country and on any given weekend, there are hundreds of riders out there. Even though most people ride safely, some riders can experience problems. On Saturday, May 2nd, Mike Shoer of Oak Grove, MN had a rollover accident on the Gandy Dancer. The Duxbury Fire Department was first on the scene to stabilize him. He was later transported by ambulance to the Pine Medical Center for a suspected broken collar bone. Of course, we are wishing him a speedy recovery so he can hit the trails soon. Please keep in mind the importance of helmets when you are out on the trail. They can be hot and uncomfortable, but if he had not been wearing one, there is a chance this accident could have been worse!
As we venture out and about, we are all thinking in the back of our heads, those two dreaded words; Swine Flu (H1N1 virus). Most of the time we see these diseases hit other countries, so it is frightening when it gets this close. I guess we will have to follow the rules of hygiene, wash our hands and cover our mouth when coughing. Hopefully this flu will not turn out to be another pandemic. Keep hope alive!
Evan Smith (center) with family receiving a Star Award at St. Alponsus Parish School in Brooklyn Center
Last Wednesday we traveled to St. Alponsus Parish School in Brooklyn Center to watch Evan Smith, our nine year old grandson receive the Star Award. He was so surprised to see his grandpa, grandmothers on both sides of the family, his mom and dad in attendance. The Star Award is given to students who show excellent citizenship along with the positive ways they interact with others students and their teachers. We are so proud of him.
I woke up last Saturday and made a delicious pancake breakfast and just had to sample some of Duxbury’s finest maple syrup made by Ron McCullen. All I can say is “YUMMY”! It was sweet, thick and a welcome compliment to my breakfast! I have heard that it’s great on ice cream also, but have never tried it. I will wait for a hot afternoon and give myself a treat.
Wow!!! I got to try the tastiest chili a few days ago. It was unusual to me because it was made with boneless chicken breasts, white northern and butter beans. It was very flavorful and leaves you wanting more. I will be posting the recipe for you to try on Duxburynews.info.
