Thanks for sharing your Deer Recipes. Here are a couple that we received. If you have anymore, please do send them in or make a comment to this post.
-------
This recipe was translated from Amelia Jul, a Swedish Christmas magazine. It called for ground moose, but venison works great.
1LB. Ground Venison
8 oz. Ground Pork
1/2 yellow onion
Butter for frying
1 tsp. Thyme
1 tsp. Rosemary
1 tsp. Marjoram
5 crushed Juniper berries
1 egg
1/2 tablespoon beef base
1/4 cup Water
1 tsp. salt
Pinch fresh ground black
Peel and finely chop onion.
Fry in butter until color starts to turn brown.
Blend in spices and juniper berries.
Let cool.
Mix all ingredients including salt and pepper.
Moisten hands in cold water and form into cocktail size meatballs.
Lay meatballs on a water rinsed cutting board.
Brown meatballs in butter.
Shake frying pan so meatballs are evenly brown.
Lower temp and cook 3-5 minutes uncovered.
Juniper berries are available from Bread & Honey in Mora.
Enjoy

Winter is here!
Duxbury News - Winter is Here!

Suffice it to say, winter is here! The ground has hardened, the leaves are gone and on a clear day you can see your neighbor’s house!
I recently attended the Wilma Town Hall Meeting, which is always very remarkable. If you are interested in hearing about what happens at these meetings, go to WilmaTownship.com for information. I had a chance to talk with Eldon Schmedeke there, and found that his wife Marge was not feeling well. It is our hope that she is feeling much better now.
The Duxbury Fire Department is looking for volunteers to help keep everyone safe. They respond to emergencies in the area, which include Wilma, New Dosey and Danforth Townships. If you are interested, contact me and I will put you in touch with the necessary people.
Last week I had a chance to enjoy conversation at the Duxbury Store. Bev Vink, who owns the store with her husband Joe, was busily preparing both breakfast and lunch and the air filled with the smell of piping hot fresh coffee. People came and went about their way. We also had a chance to chat with Fran Levings, which is always a treat.
Sandy and Curtis, from Sandstone stopped in. They were making deliveries and came in for a nice hot meal on a cold afternoon. Laughter rang out as Curtis Martin kiddingly mentioned the “horror” of having to wear green tights while playing Robin Hood at the Kerrick School in 1973. The laughter came out because his teacher was Bev Vink, who taught music at the school during that time. What do you remember about your school days? Think how times have changed; let us know what is better now or what was better then. I think a lot of people would love to hear from you about your school experiences any era.
According to Bev, the deer hunting was a bit lackluster. They had 435 deer registered this year. In 2007, they had 621 deer and back in 2000 they had 1,540. Wow, that is quite a change! It was thought that it was due to the timber wolves. I guess even a timber wolf knows what tastes good! Speaking of good taste, if anyone has a good deer recipe, please send it to me at the email above or post it as a comment at DuxburyNews.info. I think we would all enjoy a warming comfort meal on a cold winter’s night.
There is good news for those that have no transportation, limited access to it, or simply want to save on gas. Bus service is coming to Duxbury and surrounding townships. Arrowhead Transit has arranged transportation to several towns to make it easier for us to get out and about. This is set to start January 2009 and service will be on the first and third Tuesdays to Sandstone. It will go to Pine City on the second and fourth Tuesday. Not only will these buses pick you up at your home, but they are also handicap accessible, making it easier for everyone! Please utilize the wonderful opportunity and let your friends know. If you have questions, contact Arrowhead Transit at 866-682-2154 or for TTD 800-862-0175. See you on the bus!
In the spirit of Christmas and silliness, I offer a few corny jokes. The answers are at the bottom so don’t peek, just give them a try!
1. What do snowmen eat for breakfast?
2. What does a cat on the beach have in common with Christmas?
3. What do you call people that are afraid of Santa Claus?
4. What is the difference between the Christmas alphabet and the ordinary alphabet?
5. What is a parent’s favorite Christmas carol?
Christmas is a time to be happy, so don’t let holiday shopping stress you out. Remember Stressed is just Desserts spelled backwards!
Many that were at some of the events I have covered have asked to see more photographs. If you would like to see more photos of what’s happening in Duxbury, go to DuxburyNews.info.
I would like to wish each and everyone a wonderful holiday season. A season of friends, family and unconditional love for everyone. Pray for our brave military men and women for a safe return home and pray to bless this wonderful country, for we are blessed to live here. Always love each other.
Here are the corny answers to the corny Christmas jokes above.
1. Frosted Flakes
2. Sandy Claws
3. Claustrophobic
4. The Christmas alphabet has no L (Noel)
5. Silent Night
Happy Holidays and thanks for reading!

Duxbury News - Duxbury Fire Department Annual Raffle
Toni Williamson, toni@duxburynews.info
Hello again!
I hope this article finds you in good health and enjoying the wonderful beginning of the Holiday Season.
The Duxbury Volunteer Fire Department held its Sportsman’s Raffle on Saturday, November 15, 2008, at the Duxbury Bar. It was hosted by Michael McCullen and it is an annual social gathering. The Duxbury Bar, which is only open during the hunting season, was filled to the brink with hunters and locals. They enjoyed a fun evening getting to know one another, talking about the thrills of victory and the agony of defeat with regard to deer hunting season. There were men and women from many cities near and far and friendship and conversation abounded!
Even with the fun and camaraderie, the purpose of the raffle was to raise funds for the Duxbury Volunteer Fire Department. Many people had purchased raffle tickets, hoping to win that big prize. Additional prizes were also handed out ranging from hats, can coozies, gun cleaning cloths, and more. The big prizes were an afghan made by Maureen Fust, a bear arrow and a .20-06 deer rifle. The grand prize winner of the rifle was Dave Nelson from Andover, MN. He was needless to say, quite happy.
The evening continued with more conversation ranging from weather predictions, to deer recipes. There was discussion on possibly having people donate deer skins and maybe a deer feast for next year. Regardless of what is planned, it will be an enjoyable evening and we invite you all to “come on over to Duxbury” and enjoy warm hospitality and help our volunteer fire department. Participation will ensure that they are able to protect our beautiful land. Watch for it for next year. You may win a rifle, but you will make friends!
I never proclaimed to be a professional journalist and I suppose Time magazine will not want to hire me after having a mistake in my very first article. In my first article, I noted Stephanie Hansen as Patrice Winfield’s sister. Her sister is, in fact Rebecca Donicht from Ogema Township. I hear this caused quite a bit of chuckling and I apologize for the mistake. It was a fun gathering and we again thank Patrice for her generous hospitality.
Thanksgiving seems to come faster every year. It seems like we went from Halloween to Christmas, and Thanksgiving had to raise its hand to be recognized! But one thing that Thanksgiving is known for is being a gathering of friends and family. Some you may see weekly, some monthly and some once in a great while. Even in these struggling times, we all have something to be thankful for. The smile of your children or grandchildren with whipped cream on their face from the pumpkin pie, the hearty hugs as relatives from opposite sides of the country get to see each other again; and then there’s the food!
We are truly thankful for the phenomenal healing of my husband’s father, who suffered a massive stroke on November 18. Family and friends made a pilgrimage to Palm Bay, Florida to see him, pray and hope for the best. We saw friends and family that we had not seen in years. We only wish it was for a happier reason. Thankfully the bad news turned to good. He is doing well after not being expected to live more than five days and has been released from the hospital and is in a rehabilitation hospital. His strength is coming back and we are truly thankful.
Believe in miracles. Forgive someone that has wronged you, do something nice for a stranger. Love your friends and family. Tomorrow is promised to no one. Give them flowers while they can still smell them.
Remember, if there is an event you would like me to write about or news you would like to get out, please email me at toni@duxburynews.info.

Duxbury News - Hunting Season in here!
Duxbury News
Toni Williamson, DuxburyNews@gmail.com
Hi, I’m Toni Williamson, my husband Glen and I are recent transplants to the metropolis of Duxbury. Moving from Brooklyn Park to this wonderful community has been eye opening. It’s great to be somewhere where people know each other, take care of each other and aren’t afraid to say hello to someone they don’t know. We first came here when we purchased a cabin and loved it so much we would use any excuse to come back, even if just for a night.
We have met so many nice people. Living here is a breath of fresh air that has inspired me to write about it, maybe once a month if you will have me. I would like to entertain and if possible, enlighten. Maybe even help you to remember what a special place we live in. The beauty others have to leave their homes for is something we can see out of our own window. If you come away with no more than a smile from this humble writing, then that is the most I hope for. I also welcome any feedback, thoughts or events we should attend.
Many of you have heard of Duxbury and may have visited the “famous” Duxbury Store. Duxbury is in Wilma Township. Wilma Township recently celebrated its’ 101st birthday. The old gal still has some pep in her step as we celebrated the Fall Fest at the Wilma Town Hall on Saturday, October 18th with a delicious potluck, followed with music, dancing and fun conversation with old and new friends. The organizers of this event welcome your feedback as this is a great way to bring everyone together and they would like to do again.
Deer rifle hunting is in full motion. Many hunters are making their way in our direction. You can see the area coming even more vibrant with hunters in search of that big buck. Please be safe and good luck everyone!
We recently had the chance to enjoy a lovely afternoon this last Sunday, at the home of our friend Patrice Winfield. Delicious food and friendly conversation abounded with people we knew before and people we now call our friends. Isn’t it amazing that you can find people you have never met that live just down the road from you? All they have to do is describe their road or driveway and you instantly say “Oh I know where that is!” We had the honor of meeting Patrice’s father and all I can say is, be ready to laugh. This man is 82 years old with a wit so quick that you don’t see it coming, but you know when it hits you! I also had a chance to see Fran Levings and her husband Dave Baker from New Dosey Township. Fran writes a column in the Pine County Courier and the Askov American called the Cloverton News that I read almost religiously. You have probably read it also. Her positive demeanor and wide knowledge is an inspiration! I also met Patrice’s sister Rebecca Donicht from Ogema Township , Stephanie Hansen and her husband Dennis. Talking with them was a special treat. It was a surprise to find out that Stephanie plays the Base Tub as part of a Jug Band and was recently featured on the local show On the Road Again with Jason Davis. Bruce and Donna Filler, also from Wilma Township were also there and we had laughs about simple things and were very happy to have a talk with them as we do not always have the chance to do this.
The afternoon turned to evening with a beautiful walk by the river (with our orange a’ blazing – so the hunters see you) to see a beautiful setting. The loveliness of the sky, the crispness of the breeze and the warmth of the people we were with, was beautiful.
A testament of the friendship and caring in this community… There was someone that was coming late that had car problems. It was a Northwood’s problem, they hit a deer! Our gracious host jumped into her car and went to make sure she was OK. Northwood’s hospitality at its best; it’s not imitated, it’s natural and pure. That’s why we love it here.
When I mentioned to others that I wanted to do this article, I was happily met with enthusiasm. I hope I have helped to make your day better; with a chuckle, something to make you think, or even better, something that inspires you to make your own township a happier place.
